INTRODUCTION

by Lioness Roberta

This is a human interest story about becoming a volunteer or belonging to the 100 Mile House and District Lioness Club. Our club started back in September 1956 as an auxilliary to the 100 Mile House Lions, and at that time we were called Lady Lions. Over the years we have been very active in our community raising monies to help with different organisations, and individuals who are in our community, and even some that are outside.
I am writing this down the best that I can remember because I have only been associated with Lioness since 1971! My name is Roberta Graves.

Since 100 Mile House has had a high school, the Lioness Club has given a scholarship to a deserving student and that dates back to 1960. If my memory is right, the first person to receive a scholarship from the Lady Lions was Maggie McDonough who the Maggie McDonough preschool is named after.
When our local hospital was opened, the Lady Lions helped with different furnishings and have continued doing this for many years.
We also have helped send a child with disabilities to Camp Winfield every year for more years than I remember.

You may wonder why I am writing all this down.
Well our group of wonderful ladies is growing smaller each year and we need to find newer members to join us. We would like to invite you to our meetings that we have once a month. We meet the second Tuesday of the month for a dinner meeting held at B.J. Donuts. We enjoy a superb dinner, enjoy each others company, aswell as have a productive meeting. We encourage new ideas, consider how best to achieve the maximum help to the community with our resources, and how best to raise funds.
I know that times have changed and everyone is busier than ever. You may say "I have a family to look after, a job to go to, and really do not have the time". Most of our members have also done just that over the years, no-one is expected to do more than she is able to. Some members started Lioness in the 60's, whilst caring for a family and working too, they are now retired and still working hard for the community, we also have some members working.
For the last seven years, we helped the Rotary of 100 Mile House with the annual Fall Fair. This was a huge undertaking for our small club, last year we had to scale down our help to them.

What I really would like to say to the ladies of the community who are 20 years and older, if you are interested in helping your community grow and prosper, if you would like to meet new people, come along to one of our meetings. See how our club functions, meet our members, enjoy an evening out. We do work to helping others, but we really have fun in the process.
